Horny Goat Weed – a herb for erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. Horny goat weed, also known as ‘yin yang huo’ in traditional Chinese medicine, has been used for centuries as a remedy to treat erectile dysfunction, low libido, and bone disorders.

It is the extract from the Epimedium plant and contains the active ingredient ‘icariin’ that acts as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. It helps increase circulation by thinning the blood and improves sexual function. (1)

How does it help with ED?

When a man is sexually stimulated, his body naturally suppresses the ‘phosphodiesterase type 5’ levels, to help relax the blood vessels, increase blood flow and allow an erection. (2)

In men with erectile dysfunction, PDE5 levels are not suppressed and leads to the inability to have an erection. The active ingredient ‘icariin’ helps inhibit the activities of the PDE5 enzyme and stimulate blood flow, in a similar way to that of the medication ‘Viagra’. Hence, horny goat weed is also referred to as the ‘natural Viagra’. However, there is not enough scientific evidence to support the efficacy of the herb in the treatment for ED.

How effective is it?

Horny goat weed has several medical properties and is also known to improve bone density, treat osteoporosis and even polio. The supplement helps calm and smoothen muscle tissues and relieve pain and numbness caused in the joints. It also contains ‘phytoestrogens’ that may help increase oestrogens levels and reduce bone loss in postmenopausal women. Other health conditions that can be treated with horny goat weed are: (3)

  • Bronchitis
  • Heart diseases
  • Ejaculation problems
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Liver disease
  • Memory loss
  • High blood pressure
